George Russell converted his pole position into victory in the opening race of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Australian Grand Prix.
Russell Takes Victory
After pressure from the Ferrari’s at the start, Russell was soon in a class of his own. This was also helped by Mercedes’ decision to pit under the VSC, which was deployed following the breakdown of Isack Hadjar’s Red Bull power unit.
Russell led teammate Kimi Antonelli over the line, ending Mercedes’ seven-year wait for another victory at Albert Park,. Lewis Hamilton secured their last win there back in 2019.
The victory also means Russell leads the Drivers’ Championship standings for the first time in his career. Going into the season, many predicted that the Silver Arrows would be competitive and they have certainly lived up to those expectations.
Positive Start for Hamilton
After a tough opening campaign in red, Ferrari and Hamilton have shown a clear step forward from last season. Not only is the car more competitive, but the seven-time world champion also appears to be in a much more positive mindset.
The Stevenage-born racer never seemed to fully get to grips with the ground-effect cars, but finishing P4 and arguably looking the quicker of the two Ferraris was a much more reassuring result for both him and the team.
Tough Race for Norris
McLaren struggled for pace this weekend. Despite Oscar Piastri leading FP2, they were never truly able to challenge Mercedes or Ferrari.
The race itself saw Norris not having to contend with home favourite Piastri. His adoring fans were left devastated after the Australian crashed on the lap to the grid.
The reigning world champion spent much of the race running in fifth. Despite pressure from Max Verstappen late on, he managed to cross the line and earn 10 valuable points for his team.
Fast-Starting Lindblad
Arvid Lindblad impressed many on his Formula 1 debut, particularly at the start. While others struggled, the 18-year-old surged into the top five and was even challenging Hadjar.
He eventually dropped behind the likes of Norris and had several battles with fellow Brit Oliver Bearman. Unfortunately for the rookie, he ultimately lost out in the fight with Bearman’s Haas, but the result is still something he can be proud of, picking up four points and beating teammate Liam Lawson.
Six Points for The Bear
Oliver Bearman and Haas showed strong pace all weekend and the Brit’s finishing position reflects a well-deserved result for both team and driver.
Much like last season, Bearman outperformed Esteban Ocon in the race, continuing to put pressure on the experienced Frenchman.
What’s Next?
The Formula 1 circus now heads to the Shanghai International Circuit for the Chinese Grand Prix next weekend. It will be another early start for fans in the UK, with lights out scheduled for 7:00am.
