George Russell claimed the first Sprint Pole of his Formula 1 career during Sprint Qualifying at the Chinese Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver will be joined on the front row by teammate Kimi Antonelli, completing a dominant session for the Silver Arrows.
The Russell Hustle Continues
Mercedes continued the strong form they showed during the opening race weekend of the season. Russell topped FP1 earlier in the day before going on to dominate Sprint Qualifying, finishing fastest in every segment on his way to pole.
His final lap secured the top spot by just under three tenths of a second over Antonelli, who is currently under investigation for impeding Lando Norris during the session.
After several challenging seasons during the ground-effect era, Mercedes will be encouraged to see their hard work paying off, as they appear to be the team to beat early in the 2026 season.
Improvement for McLaren
McLaren endured a difficult opening race weekend, with Lando Norris finishing fifth while Oscar Piastri failed to start the race.
However, there were clear signs of progress in Shanghai. Both papaya-clad drivers showed promising pace in practice, finishing third and fourth respectively.
That performance carried into qualifying, where Norris secured third place on the Sprint grid, while Piastri qualified fifth.
Not Enough for Ferrari
Ferrari showed flashes of pace in SQ1, but ultimately couldn’t match the speed of the Mercedes drivers when it mattered most.
Lewis Hamilton will start the Sprint race from fourth after finishing around six tenths behind his former teammate Russell, while Charles Leclerc qualified sixth.
Bearman Continues to Impress
Oliver Bearman once again out-performed teammate Esteban Ocon by reaching the final segment of Sprint Qualifying. Ocon was unable to make SQ3.
Meanwhile, Arvid Lindblad suffered an issue during FP1 that limited his preparation for qualifying. The rookie will start 15th for tomorrow’s Sprint race.
